Spa Heaters - Electric spa heaters
The most common method to heat spas, hot tubs and Jacuzzis today is with electrical heaters. They are easy to install. No costly gas lines to run and get permits for. They are safe and small.
An electrical spa heater consists of a heating element in a stainless steel casing.
The electric spa heater works in the following way
1. A circulation pump or jet pump turn on and push water over the heater
2. The flow switch or pressure switch sense that water is actually flowing across the heater
3. If the pressure switch or flow switch says, "yes, we have water flowing here", the spa control system will let electricity to the element terminals
4. This results in an electrical current flowing in the heating element
5. Each time the water passes over the warm element it warms up a fraction of a degree, and over a number of hours the water heats up to the temperature set by the thermostat.
Advantage of an electrical hot tub heater
• Inexpensive to install and replace
• Low heating costs if the spa is equipped with a good quality spa cover
Disadvantages of an electrical spa heater
• Long heating time
• High heating costs if the spa is equipped with low quality spa cover
• Almost impossible to heat a spa without a spa cover
Common reason why a spa heater fails
1. Dry fires. If the pressure switch or flow switch are faulty. They may tell the spa control system that there is water flowing across the heating element when there is not. This results in that the heating element will overheat in a matter of second and break.
2. Mechanical Failure of the heating element. If the terminal where the heating wires attaches to the heating unit is bent too much during the installation of the spa heating element. This could result in that terminal breaking off
3. Spa water chemistry. This is the most common reason why hot tub heaters fail. A heating element is susceptible to the pH of the water. A spa with low pH over an extended period of time will destroy it
